About this deal

His latest novel is BEAUTIFUL SHINING PEOPLE, a speculative coming-of-age story set in Tokyo that explores how the things that cast us as outsiders can be the very things that draw us together, and examines whether there is an inherent meaning in the world to come, or if we must create our own. He decides on a whim to pop into a café that offers ear cleaning for only 4900 yen and he decides it might ease his jet lag. The setting of Japan – and mainly Tokyo – therefore, offers a very credible backdrop because of the tech savviness with which the country is associated. Challenging, enlightening, and terrifying, TRUST NO ONE asks the question other people are too scared to: what happens when you can no longer believe your own eyes? Our two protagonists are struggling to understand the big ‘why’ questions and as the author leads us in their journeys it makes for a beautiful and thought-provoking read.

Aside from the relationship between the two main characters, and the subordinate ones who round out the cast, this book is about the world, where it is, where it is going and how people treat one another. It is readable too, though its plot holes and some the character’s scarcely credible reactions can be occasionally infuriating. While in parts he did come over as a bit immature, it's is easy to like his flawed character and development. His writing has appeared in Fast Company, VICE, The Guardian, Litro Magazine, The Irish Times, Screen, Quartz and others.

There are a number of places where the beautiful descriptions don't advance the story and you can be justified to speed-read or skip. In a review for NME, Nick Reilly said, "Opener 'Happy Smiling [sic] People' sees Ezra anchoring an infectious chorus around dark and world-weary lyrics: "What a terrible time to be alive if you're prone to overthinking", he croons, before offering a message of upbeat and hearty resilience ("Hey pretty smiling people, we're alright together"). Its been over a month since I finished this book and I still don't feel like I have the right words to describe how hauntingly real and beautiful it is.Beautiful Shining People is both an intriguing thriller and a meditation and is in places unforgettable and affecting.
