About this deal

Communication cue cards, used primarily with people who are verbal, can be a reminder of what to say and provide an alternative means to communication in stressful situations. An autistic person may appear not to hear what you say to them, not respond to their name, or appear indifferent to any attempts you make to communicate.

A practical session on administrating formal and informal assessments with Paediatric and adult client groups Reassure your child that non-verbal communication, such as smiling and waving, is fine until they feel better about talking. In time, the person may learn to anticipate the situations that provoke this distressing reaction and do all they can to avoid them. For some forms of AAC, there is no evidence to show whether they are effective or ineffective, safe or harmful.

Being a good listener is a really important part of a good conversation. We often forget this when we're concentrating on what we're going to say. The expectation to talk to certain people triggers a freeze response with feelings of anxiety and panic, and talking is impossible. For others, there is some evidence of harm or ineffectiveness. For example, we do not believe that facilitated communication isan appropriate intervention for autistic people, as there is evidence that it is ineffective and can lead to significant harm. Be face-to-face with the person so that you can more easily observe what they are interested in. Being level with them will allow them to see the variety of facial expressions that are used in communication. But be aware that having to process this visual information at the same time may make it more difficult to process any verbal information.

Socially speaking offers a social skills programme for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, physical and medical disabilities. This can make them "shut down" and be unable to speak when overwhelmed in a busy environment. Again, their anxiety can transfer to other people in that environment. Social awkwardness is when you feel uncomfortable and out of place in social situations. It feels unpleasant, but being socially awkward has some benefits, too.
